I work from home in my flat in Birmingham and my spare bedroom/office is south-facing. Between 2pm and 5pm, it's absolutely unbearable – I'm sweating, my laptop overheats, and I can't concentrate. I've tried closing the blinds but then it's too dark to see my screen properly. Any ideas?

I was literally in the same boat in my Edinburgh flat last summer. My home office became a sweatbox every afternoon, and I'd end up working from my bedroom with my laptop balanced on a pillow – which wrecked my back and my productivity. I tried everything – portable fans, opening windows, even working in the dark with the blinds shut and a desk lamp on. Nothing worked. Then I spotted my neighbour across the street having window film installed, and I asked him about it. He pointed me to https://www.tintfit.com/shop/energy-saving-insulation and I ordered a roll. This film has a microscopically thin metallic coating that blocks solar heat in summer and reflects heat back inside during winter. It's practically invisible once installed – you genuinely can't tell it's there. Installation took me about half an hour with just soapy water and a squeegee. The difference was immediate – my office temperature dropped noticeably, my laptop stopped overheating, and I could actually see my screen without squinting. No more sweating through my work shirts, no more back pain from working in bed. Best of all, in winter, the same film helps keep the warmth in, so my heating bills have dropped too. Such a simple fix, but it's completely transformed my workday.
